The order was 34028, 34070, 80104, 80078, 53, 6695 and visiting 7F 88 from the West Somerset. The overall event was really superb and the weather was to match! Defintaley worth a trip back next year! Didcot was the venue for this day and it was certainly nice to be able to do something different rather than just mainline photography. ]]> Sat May 23 2009 Jim: Cromwell Railtour http://matthewtomsjamescummins.fotopic.net/c1681886.html Back again on the trail of steam with Matt and Oliver Cromwell was back once again for a difference from the norm, a jaunt down the "Pompey" Direct via Fareham, Salisbury and Yeovil Junction. First port of call was Peasmarsh for a shot both Matt and I have wanted to try for ages, result came out really well, just a shame that the light wasnt too great when 70013 arrived. That was more than made up by chatting to two fellow photographers, both formerly involved within the Aircraft industry so that was a definite plus! Then on the way back after a brain wave on the way home from Woking station, i turned round and headed to Yeovil! Thank god i managed to pass the loco at Salisbury and get some decent shots of the Britannia on the turntable. Tornado couldnt of been a bigger bill to start this year collection of photos. The brand new A1 has attracted a massive amount of attention and media coverage since its first run up north and its great to see this super engine down our neck of the woods. Locations for the photos are in Woking, and a first for me but not for the site, Eastleigh, which played host to the biggest crowd i have seen for a steam special in many years! It was heaving!! Anyway here's my results from today and happy belated 2009!!! Saturday 14 February 2009: First photo session for the new year and what a superb way to kick off 2009! And if that is so it was well worth the effort. In typically wintry conditions, 34067 was in charge of a special railtour with the purpose of taking people to Winchester catherdal for christmas carols and for the town christmas market. But it wasnt the market that interested me! Tangmere made good effect of the cold conditions and became a mobile smoke screen when she departed Winchester! And this is where i found out about our bonus, 60019 Bittern was due through light engine, many thanks to the bloke in the rear coach that let me know about this, otherwise i would have missed it! After seeing two it was the on for the third at Worplesdon. As ever it was mainline regular 35028 Clan Line, and as ever she looked in fine fettle working hard up the bank. The light wasn't great but managed to get a few shots of each. Having spent the night in Birmingham, i decided to travel along to the GCR today to check out 70013 renamed as long lost sister 70048 "The Terriotrial Army 1908-1958". I did plan to go to Quorn to visit the special dedication event with the TA, however with no service trains stopping there before the event, a quick change of plan just based my shots to Loughborough where there was plenty going on! With 70013 (as 70048), 5960, 63601, 78019, 3440, 850, 42085 and a few diesels to boot, there was plenty to photograph! And it also hello to old freind 35028 "Clan Line" which i havent seen in an age and a half but she will no doubt be a firm regular on the xmas runs. Managed to get just a couple of shots in but im happy with the results. The railway put up a superb "Cambrian" Themed gala with 9017 "Earl Of Berkerley" and 3440 "City Of Truro" being the stars of the show, although 7802 "Bradley Manor" turned many heads being painted in typical Cambrian style. Like in the last visit, all night running was again evident and was again experienced. Ive never felt so wrecked at the end of a steam gala than taking part in a SVR event! This was a properly ace gala and which the railway fully deserves in light of a Disasterous 2007. My congrats to all concerned with the gala, wether it was driving or just selling ice creams, this like so many galas before, makes me want to return for more! The Mid Hants was the first port of call. Its Big Four gala was mixed in with visits from Kinlet Hall & Nunney Castle for the GWR and Ivatt 41241 for the LMS. Sadly 8F 48305 couldnt make the jounrey and 34007 was failed on the Sunday morning after Ropley MPD found a defect with its oil bath. Nevertheless it produced a good gala with some good results which i was happy to get. It was also nice to see something different, and being a Southern steam fan, i stick my neck out by saying the GWR stuff was very impressive! The last time i saw the Britannia was "from new" when she had just been outshopped from Loughborough after her overhaul by the GCR boys, in time for her 1T57 commerative run in August to celebrate the End of Steam in 1968. This time she was a long way from home, but in the face of awful weather in the Capital, 70013 still produced a fine showing as she departed Waterloo and battled her way through Vauxhall and to the first scheduled stop, Woking. The weather at least was much improved and i luckly managed to grab a few shots before Ollie stormed out of Woking, heading for Bristol. I only had to wait 4 days for when i next saw 70013 on a glorious morning at Woking, in complete comparison to Thursday. Like the previous, she sounded and really looked the part! It was super to see this Fantastic loco on home turf and i look forward to getting more photos of her in the near future. Thursday 11 September 2008: First batch of pictures on the website for sometime and what better way to get things moving again than capturing 70013 on its first ever run on former LSWR tracks. The last time i saw the Britannia was "from new" when she had just been outshopped from Loughborough after her overhaul by the GCR boys, in time for her 1T57 commerative run in August to celebrate the End of Steam in 1968. On arriving at the railway, it was to great surprise to find that there were no more than 5 locos in steam on the day. They being Hurricane, Southern Maid, Northern Chief, Samson and Typhoon. As well as the Diesel Captain Howey also working. Having travelled down the line to Dungeness which is the best representation for bleakness, the weather was great the results which i got where worth the trip down to this part of Kent.
